7th Annual Successfully Serving Your Aging Congregation

  • Town and Country Lutheran Church 4049 Marconi Avenue Sacramento, CA, 95821 United States (map)

A FREE event for faith leaders on assisting an aging congregation and their families.

We know that families who are facing chronic health conditions, dementia, and other aging concerns often turn to their faith community for support. Families are met with varying levels of knowledge and understanding of the complex needs and support services available. Faith leaders are in a critical position to be able to encourage families and to provide guidance and resources throughout their journey.

We invite leaders of churches, synagogues, and other faith-based organizations to join us for this important event.

3 FREE Continuing Education Units (CEU's) available for RN/LVN. Provider #CEP 12415

Program Description

Ministering to Individuals at the End-of-Life: Understanding the Role of Hospice and Palliative Care - Michael S. Gaddini, MD Associate Medical Director, Snowline Hospice - We explore the role of hospice and palliative care, addressing common misconceptions about each service, the differences between them, and how to choose the best option. Additionally, we will examine our own attitudes about death and dying, as well as the language we use and helpful questions we can ask to generate open, healthy conversations - providing guidance to the people we serve as they make end-of-life decisions.

"I'm NOT Depressed!" - Beverly Chang, MD, Geriatric Psychiatry Direct - It is important for all of us to recognize how depression presents differently in older adults and what treatments are available. Additionally, new-onset depression and anxiety can often be a presenting symptom of cognitive decline, and it is important for us to understand how to differentiate the two conditions. We will discuss techniques helping advocate for older adults that are struggling with these issues.

Community Programs in Action! - Michelle Nevins, Executive Director, Del Oro Caregiver Resource Center and John Tan, Staff Attorney, Legal Services of Northern California - Learn how two local non-profit agencies effectively serve our community with their established programs.
