Dementia 101

9:00 am     DEMENTIA: WHAT IS IT?

Instructor: Esther Lara, Clinical Social Worker and Research Administrator for UC Davis Alzheimer's Disease Center, with over 20 years of experience with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias.

Participants will learn the difference between normal forgetfulness and serious memory loss; be able to recognize the signs and symptoms of Alzheimer's disease and related demetias; learn the common causes of dementia; understand how a person is diagnosed; learn what medications and therapies are used to treat people with dementia; and understand the effects of dementia on the brain's function and behavior.

10:30 am     DEMENTIA: UNDERSTANDING & MANAGING BEHAVIORS

Instructor: Wanda Demarest, Program Supervisor for the Placerville Senior Day Care Center, with over 30 years of experience providing care and supervision to individuals with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias.

Participants will learn specialized skills and techniques that are helpful in coping effectively with the unique behaviors associated with dementia. Learn how to make each day a great one for the individual with dementia by creating an environment in which the individual can thrive and which might possibly make day-to-day life a little easier for his/her caregiver, too.
