For most of our workshops, limited in-home respite is available. If you need someone to care for your loved one so that you may attend a class, please indicate your need for respite upon registering.

Dealing with Daily Difficulties

Join us for a FREE workshop, presented by Maria Ciscoe, Certified Activities Director.  Maria will share her insight regarding the messages a person has difficulty communicating as well as the sometimes bizarre behaviors caregivers face daily. Once we understand the reason a person is agitated or resistant to care, we are in a better place to provide our loved ones with quality care. In this presentation, you will learn about:

  • Identifying behavioral challenges and effective strategies to cope
  • Consideration of environment and approach
  • Providing activities that reinforce belonging and security

Surviving a Stroke: Practical Advice for Caregivers

Presented by: Susan Croopnick, RN, MS, Stroke Coordinator at Mercy San Juan Medical Center. Are you a caregiver for someone who is recovering from a stroke?  Do you wish you knew more about strokes so you could better assist your loved one?

Healthcare professionals now describe a stroke as a brain attack and a medical emergency.  But what causes strokes?  What are the different types of strokes?  And most importantly, after your loved one has suffered a stroke, how can you assist them in their recovery?

Static in the Attic: Memory Enhancement & Brain Wellness

Memory can actually get better as we age, but it requires training with regular brain exercises. In this FREE workshop for caregivers, Dr. Alice Jacobs, Educational Physiologist and pioneer in the field of senior learning, will discuss recent brain research, ways to enhance memory and how to lead  a brain-wellness lifestyle.  She also will explain how memory works, including factors that impact it, and what we can do to preserve our wits and lessen our risk of developing dementia. You will be able to try out some exercises designed to stimulate different areas of the brain for a good “neurobic” workout! Join us and have fun while you grow some new brain cells!

Serving Up Nutrition for Caregivers

Good nutrition is key to good health, and good health is especially important for caregivers and their loved ones.  But digesting all the information about nutrition can be difficult and overwhelming. Join Suzanne Anderson, RD, as she shares the basics of nutrition, explains reading food labels, covers guidelines related to vitamins and minerals, explains the fluid needs of the elderly and chronically ill, and provides ways to encourage and assist your loved one to eat for better health.
